19 April Virginia Tech ShootingsThe story is 2 days old now... what an unimaginable tragedy. All those lives lost in a moment due to a madman's whims.
where does the solution lie:
1. the fact that the judge let him go from detention despite his behavior? if that is the case could that be extended to saying anyone with issues around mental health (especially those displaying violent thoughts and tendencies) needs to be locked up?
2. the fact that someone with such frail mental health could easily buy firearms? I think there is a possibility here to stem this. Will help in preventing a certain number of innocent deaths for sure.
But that begs the point: anyone who is crazy, angry and determined enough to kill innocent people and himself/herself in the end will find some way to fulfil this: if they dont have guns, they will build other crude weapons. They could possibly cause as much damage.
So at the end of it, is there any hope for prevention? where does a collective responsibility need to be inserted to ensure the below:
1. young kids dont end up in their 20's being clinically depressed, violent and suicidal
2. kids/teens with depression have much more access to cures, and support systems where they have chances of getting better, not worse
3. there is some level of oversight on the day to day activities of children/teens and even adults who fail to meet a bar of "yes they are socially responsible to walk around in society" |
